Wireless Internet Now Available

The Irondequoit Public Library is happy to announce that wireless Internet access is now available at both branches. Access to this Hotspot is free and requires a laptop or other Internet-enabled device. If you’re unsure of how to setup wireless access on your laptop, please read the instructions below.

How to Connect to the Wireless Internet Hotspot

Make sure that your laptop or other Internet device is equipped with a wireless network card.

1. If the laptop wireless card is enabled, it should alert you that a wireless network is available. Choose LibraryNet and click Connect.

2. If your wireless card is disabled, on your laptop click Start>Control Panel>Network Connections. An icon should appear for Wireless Network Connection. If it has a red X next to it, it is disabled.

3. Double click the network icon and it should show a screen that says Choose a Wireless Network.

4. LibraryNet will be listed. This is the library’s wireless network. Click Connect.

5. If LibraryNet is not listed, click View Available Wireless Networks and it should appear.

  • A password is not needed.
  • Printing from the wireless network is not available.
  • The wireless network is only available when the library is open.
  • Make sure that the laptop or other internet device is fully charged since power outlets are limited in the library
  • Wireless Internet content is filtered so some web sites may not be accessible.
  • Happy surfing.

    What We’re Reading: Heart-Shaped Box

Heart Shaped BoxHeart-Shaped Box is Joe Hill’s debut novel about ghosts, rock and roll and revenge. It tells the story of Judas Coyne, an Alice Cooper-like rock star who has always collected the occult items sent to him by his fans. But when he buys a haunted suit off of the Internet he also gets the ghost that comes with it. And the ghost is not too happy with Judas Coyne.

Mr. Hill is no stranger to ghosts and monsters as he’s the son of Stephen King. He took Joe Hill as his pen name to make his writing stand apart from his father’s reputation as the “King of Horror.” You can easily see King’s influence on his son’s writing in Heart-Shaped Box, but you also see a creepy little ghost story that I can’t wait to finish.

Heart-Shaped Box is available at both branches in hardcover and Book on CD (coming soon), It can be reserved by calling either library (McGraw: 336-6060 & Evans: 336-6062) or using the online catalog.

And why not check out books from the entire King clan including his wife, Tabitha, and their other son, Owen.

    New Blog From Library Director

Terry Buford, the Director of the Irondequoit Public Library has launched his own blog, The Open Book. He will discuss anything and everything related to the library on The Open Book, or in his words…

“The main goal of The Open Book is to communicate all the ways the Irondequoit Public Library makes our community a better place. I’ll also throw in some cool websites, book and media recommendations, guest posts from our talented, hard working staff and all things Irondequoit. If you know me you know we’ll have some plain old silliness and fun too.”
